Domestic violence

In December 2004, the Québec government released its 2004–2009 action plan on domestic violence. In October 2005, it published the Native communities component of this action plan.

The action plan contains 72 commitments. Over half of them consist in new measures that make it possible to enhance the government’s focus in the area of domestic violence.

In recent years, the Québec government has adopted means of action and supported a variety of initiatives aimed at helping women who are victims of domestic violence.

Eight government departments and three secretariats and their networks are responsible for applying the commitments contained in the action plan. The commitments focus on four areas: prevention, detection, adaptation to special realities and sociojudicial intervention.

The Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale is one of the signatories of the action plan. It has committed itself to heighten the awareness of its employees, who may be called upon to play a role in detecting domestic violence and orienting efforts with respect to the department’s clientele.
