Low-income thresholds

Calculation of low-income thresholds ranks Québec among the provinces with the highest poverty rate. Yet, according to Statistics Canada, low-income thresholds do not constitute poverty thresholds. Because they are based on Canada-wide price indexes, low-income thresholds result in an overestimation of poverty in Québec.

In order to more accurately measure poverty thresholds in Québec, the Ministère de l'Emploi, de la Solidarité sociale et de la Famille has asked Statistics Canada to review its low-income threshold calculation method.

The summary and tables show the results of a simulation prepared by Statistics Canada for 1996-1998.
